All Hallow on the Eve 2026 - Horrifying Halloween Stories - Bloody Mary
From the 2005 film

An urban legend that's as old as modern time, adapted to film and sometimes in video games as an Easter Egg but otherwise the tale of Bloody Mary isn't only a mysterious one, but it's a story that is being lost to time. In our current social equity, many urban legends are being drowned out and lost in the social hemisphere and internet space. But the tale of Bloody Mary must live on...

Although the origins of Bloody Mary have spread from wiccan folklore to divination, from Bathory to Queen Mary the First, the history of the name matters less than the urban legends surrounding the name. For those who are unaware, if you speak the name "Bloody Mary" three times in a mirror while inside of a pitch-black room, you'll be ambushed by the malevolent spirit of Bloody Mary herself.

And while attacked by this haunting entity, unspeakable horrors will consume you...

The historical significance of Bloody Mary dates back to the 16th-century, where a particular divination ritual provoked young woman to hold a candle and (in the opposite hand) a mirror. While holding such objects, these young women would walk up a flight of stairs in a darkened house while gazing into the mirror itself. While gazing into the mirror, they were supposed to see an image of their future husbands' face appear in the polished glass.

However, there was the chance that one might witness the face of the devil or the grim reaper in the mirror, notifying them of their untimely demise before their possible wed. Much later in the 1960's, this divination ritual became modernized, with her name being chanted three times (up to 47 times, based on loose information) before the Bloody Mary herself would appear.

And when she did appear, she'd either scream curses upon you from the mirror, come out from the polished glass and strangle you, devour your soul where you stood, or apparated and drank your blood before you had a chance to escape. Her appearance is that of a corpal woman dressed as a witch, covered in blood (hence the name), and sometimes appears as a ghostly figure.

Bloody Mary also goes by numerous other names, including: Hell Mary & Mary Worth. The name Hell Mary was concocted by the Japanese, while Mary Worth was allegedly an actual witch whgo was burned at the stake for stealing towns' children and sapping them of life for her own rejuvenated youth. It is said that Mary Worth the Witch remains the spirit who haunts the mirrors in the dark while calling upon her, though other opposing sources say otherwise.

Another significant claim goes back to the 16th-century when the namesake "Bloody Mary" first appeared in popular culture. It is claimed that the name Bloody Mary is derived from Queen Mary I, as she had executed hundreds of protestants during her reign. However, historians account for the mirror divination tactics implemented by young women to be a later instrument predating Quen Mary I.

Again, the ritual is simple and does not require any sort of tools or otherwise, though candles and handheld mirrors may be used as well. Standing in a dark room you look into a mirror and chant the name "Bloody Mary" three time and onward, until her ghostly apparition appears in the mirror before you. There you must stand your ground, whether she shouts, laughs, yells, or attacks you in any way if you wish to survive. Some tales of urban legend and folklore describe her as a curious specter who asks you certain questions such as "Do you think I'm pretty?" or "Would you marry me?"

If provided the incorrect response, your demise is certain...

Although the legend of Bloody Mary started in the 1960's and perhaps had its origins as far back as the 16th-century, the folklore surrounding it still remains terrifying to this day. As a child of the 90's myself, I was terrified to utter her name more than once in a pitch-black basement bathroom, the door behind me shut tight, and the mirror before me barely visible as my eyes adjusted slowly to my surroundings. Mustering up my courage, I'd speak her name a second time, flinching out of instinct, before quickly relaying it once more before plowing through the door and out of the room.

In some respects, I hope that the urban legend of Bloody Mary carries on as a ghastly tale of terror and fright, testing one's own fear factor level and witnessing just what can crawl out of the mirror. Sure, the story of Bloody Mary isn't exclusively a Halloween fright, but the story itself does tend to rear its head during the spooky season.

And for those willing and courageous enough to do so, try and call her name out in the mirror of a dark room. I dare you...
