When there’s fire down in Heaven and frost up in Hell; when the world has been inverted not by the stories we’ve read, but by the ones we’ve survived, madness has come about. At times, it’s not the monsters hiding underneath our beds that scare us the most. Rather, it’s the monsters that find us hiding.

That was the case for the young lady, as she came home to find her father’s bottle already emptied and tipping in his unconscious hand. From that minute, she knew it was only a matter of time before the monster would stir awake. Night came, and she listened for her father’s footsteps as they lingered in deep shadows, stumbling into the dull light glowing beneath the door frame. Fleeing from her sheets, she hid underneath the frame in wait.


The footsteps went quiet, replaced by the creak of the door handle, and the moans of the floorboards, as her father crept into the bedroom. Beneath the bed, the young girl waited, watching bare feet tripping over their own toes. Eventually the monster’s heels would rest along the line between the carpet and the bed frame. Until the heels turned upward, with long-nails tipping towards the gap. It was up to night to hide the girl underneath.


Tensions swelled, as long fingers reached against the frame. The child was steady, holding her mouth as her breathing grew louder. A knee now came down, followed by the other. And in the dark, a head peered down, eyes glowing with bourbon stopped her breath. She had been found ...
